TED talkで大変有名になったアメリカの研究者、ブレネー・ブラウンさん。
Vulnerabiity(ヴァルネラビリティ)という日本語にするのはちょっと難しい概念をテーマに、講演をしたり、本を著したりする中で、そのユーモアある語り口が多くの方の支持を得ている要因のひとつかもしれません。
(Vulnerabiityは「弱さ、傷つきやすさ、脆弱性」などと
翻訳されることが多い言葉です)

「アリーナに立つ人(The man in the arena)」を知りました。
それ以来、私も難しくても、苦しくても恥ずかしくても、勇気をもって「アリーナに立つ」ことを選ぶようにしています。
さて、あなたはアリーナに立つ人ですか?それとも、アリーナに立っている人を見ている人ですか?

It is not the critic who counts;
not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles,
or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.
The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena,
whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood;

but who does actually strive to do the deeds;

批評家なんて大したことない。
何かを成し遂げようとした人がいかに躓いたか、あるいは、どうしたらもっとうまくできたかを指摘することなど重要ではないのだから。
栄誉とは実際に闘技場(アリーナ)に立った人のものだ。
泥と汗と血にまみれ、勇敢に闘い、何度も何度もチャレンジしても後一歩で届かなかった人々のものだ。
なぜなら失敗や敗北のない努力はないからだ。
最後に勝利の高みを極めるのは、あることを成し遂げようと実際に努力している人のものなのだ。
彼らは素晴らしい情熱を持ち、献身し、価値ある目的のために全力をつくす人。
もし失敗したとしてもそれこそが素晴らしい成果なのだ。
勝利も敗北も知らない冷めた目でみているばかりの臆病な人は、決して戦いの場に立つ人々と同じ立場にはなれない。
